“Sob! The I Spy photo for March is of Treasure Mart,” writes Sara Kitzsteiner. “We’ll miss it so much when it’s sold.” It’s been “a real ‘treasure’ … all these years,” says Christine Alexander. “The Treasure Mart [was] opened in 1960 by Demaris Cash,” writes Susan Wineberg. “Her daughter Elaine Johns and her husband [Carl] have run it for decades.”

“Who can forget all those lazy Saturday mornings strolling down the block from Zingerman’s … [then] spending the entire morning at the Mart,” says David Karl. From a chest of drawers purchased for a first house to a wooden barstool with Naugahyde seat used daily for thirty years, readers recalled many treasured purchases at the Mart. “When I learned that [they] were planning to sell, I was a little sad, but hopeful,” writes Karl. With some “luck, the tradition may continue.” Dan Romanchik says “my wife did a little research and that masonry crack [in the photo] has also been there since 1960.” First occupied by Miller’s Planing Mill, the building was built in 1869. “These mills dotted Detroit Street and Kerrytown,” writes Wineberg.
