“Pictured … is the new Hub apartment building on E. William,” says Ben Carter, with “multiple walls painted like a treescape on the top floor.” The sixteen-story luxury student apartment building opened in August. “Previously there had been a branch of the U-M Credit Union in that spot,” writes Dave Bicknell. The former building “wasn’t nearly as stylish, but it did allow me to get cash out of the ATM at least,” quips Carter.
Hub William “features a heated rooftop swimming pool and sundeck, so it’s not your typical student housing,” continues Bicknell. “This is a far cry from the student housing I remember from the ’60s,” shares David Karl. Ann Bieneman found a picture of the Inter-Cooperative Council headquarters—“which offers student housing at half the price”—dwarfed by Hub William. “A true David and Goliath portrait,” she concludes.
The mural “is well hidden from close viewpoints,” writes Mary Adams, who logged “five-ish miles over three hours” searching Kerrytown, downtown, State St., and campus. Finally, behind Elbel Field, while “still scanning the skyline (eternally optimistic), I spied the target image’s tree branch motif.” “This was a real stumper so I’ll be interested in seeing how many correct entries you get,” says Marilyn Knepp. “Maybe they’ll all be from residents of the Hub.”
We received nine entries in October, all correct. Our random drawing winner is Steve Jensen, who shared a photo from a different angle that he took himself. He’ll enjoy his $25 gift certificate at Two Songs Bakery.
