Just ninety-eight people correctly identified the Fake Ad for the Cork Run on page 65 of the September issue. There was a time, back when we started this little contest (over thirty years ago?!) when September would consistently yield the most correct answers of any month. Times, clearly, have changed. Noticed anything else different lately?
“I guess you had fun with this one in that Corktown Races do happen in the Corktown area of Detroit, but they are held annually on the Sunday before St. Patrick’s Day so not in September, and the races don’t include a half and full marathon,” writes Lynn Palacios, in an email that contained a wealth of information that we very much did not know at all. “The 5K route does include running past the old Tiger Stadium site (Michigan and Trumbull) and the Michigan Central Station. There is a Cork City Marathon in Cork County, Ireland that includes a 10K, half marathon, and marathon. And you threw in the special appearance by Eamonn Coghlan—an Irish former track and field athlete!” Fascinating facts, all, and the mere mention of “Corktown Races” had us singing “Camptown Races” all day long (the modern version, not the offensive original). Doo-dah! Doo-dah!
“The Fake Ad is for the Cork Run races,” [doo-dah!] Jan Gombert writes. “Obviously, Cork Run is a bit of a play on Corcoran.”
Our winner was Denise Schlotfeldt, whose name had us Überstunden machen trying to work it into this month’s Fake Ad. She’s taking her $25 prize to Zingerman’s.
