The long-empty former home of Burger Fi at South University and S. Forest was finally occupied by restaurant Social House South U in September. “This space was empty for a long time,” says owner Chris Dunkel, “and we had the idea of kind of creating a place where staff and faculty should coexist and feel comfortable and to bring something a little upscale to South U.”

The restaurant is loosely divided into three service areas: a casual walk-up counter and bright self-seating area (plus takeout window) in the front, an island bar (for both breakfast and booze) in the middle, and a more formal, full-service restaurant in the back. The large menu, which Dunkel describes as “contemporary American with a little bit of ethnic fusion,” is the same in all three areas. Those on the go in the morning can order smoothies or freshly squeezed juices, avocado toasts, and breakfast burritos, while those looking to share a sit-down dinner may prefer the Korean short ribs or a pork chop with mac and cheese, along with a a selection of complex cocktails. Other options include tacos, sandwiches, salads, rice bowls, and waffles with fresh fruit.
