Last month’s Fake Ad for Classic Video appeared on page 81 of the October issue. Like all our Fake Ads, it featured the name of the previous winner somewhere in the ad. In this case, the name was “Roth.”

“Classic Video page 81!” wrote one contestant. “Thora contains Roth. Thanks for the fun!” There were many more entries along the same lines, each of them pointing out that the magic word, “Roth,” was contained in the first name of the actress, Thora Birch.

Clever. Except it isn’t. “Roth” is contained in “Thora” about as much as “ant” is contained in “carpenter.” And while there are carpenter ants and Thora Roths, including one Thora Roth who was the plaintiff in a federal case against Navy Federal Credit Union decided in 1995, it’s really not the same thing. (She lost, by the way.)

“Roth” is contained in the movie title “Hero” and the first name “Thora”–all the letters right in a row.

Silvia Ruiz was chosen as our winner from among the 109 correct entries we received. She too is taking her gift certificate to Zingerman’s.

To enter this month’s contest, find the fake ad in the November issue and follow the instructions in the box at the bottom of the Back Page. The fake ad always contains the name of last month’s winner in some form.
