October’s I Spy is “that fan-like piece of public art out along the trail at Gallup Park!” writes Julia Wu. “Thanks for the hint–[repurposed],” says Sara Kitzsteiner. “I would never have figured it out otherwise.” David Karl explains that Victoria Fuller’s “Canoe Fan” is part of a 2015 public art project that used retired rental canoes to create four works of art around town. “Bravo to the city and the artists for their creativity and ingenuity in recycling those old canoes,” he writes.

“The photo is of the center of my favorite canoe sculpture,” writes Cathy Chow about “Canoe Fan,” which is located near Gallup’s east parking lot. Richard Norman, who refers to the work as “that Statue of Liberty crown,” enjoys taking “family and friends for a hike along Gallup Park Parkway from … south of the river to the canoe livery” on the north. “Passing that sculpture,” he relays, is “a surprise extra feature.” “It’s so cheery,” writes Kristen Mowrey. “I look forward to seeing it in the winter.”
