Crowell first gained attention in the 70s as a guitarist and principal songwriter in Emmylou Harris’s band, and in the 80s he wrote hits for several country-pop performers, including Crystal Gayle and the Oak Ridge Boys, before striking out as a headliner in his own right. “Before there was alternative country, before outlaw country, before Americana, there was Rodney Crowell,” writes Americana Highways.
