Q. While we navigated through several streets with reduced lanes on the way to a concert at Hill, we wondered: do companies have to pay the city when they close streets to make room for construction?
A. They do. According to the city’s website, the street occupancy cost, per day, is 1.5 cents per square foot. Sidewalk occupancy is 5 cents per square foot. There is also a barricade inspection fee that depends upon duration (for example, the inspection fee for 1 to 3 days is priced at $170). On top of these fees are a permit review fee (minimum $68) and a processing fee ($22).
Freedom of Information Act requests reveal that closure fees for the Vanguard Hotel on Glen totaled about $36,000 before it opened in May. Through April, the developers of the 330 Detroit St. condos have paid about $15,000, and the AC Hotel on Huron St. has paid about $21,000.
