Andrea Jones went from auto parts to all in on cakes. It started in 2016, when she was flying back to Michigan from a business trip to the Dallas area. She’d been given a gift from Nothing Bundt Cakes, a specialty bakery franchise based there.

“The TSA agents were, like, really excited about the box that I was carrying,” says the MSU alum, who had long worked for an auto parts supplier. “And I was like, this must be really something! There weren’t any in Michigan at the time, but once I tasted it, I’m like, okay, so we need to get these in Michigan.”

A year later, she helped a cousin launch metro Detroit’s first outlet of the franchise, in Novi. Within two years she opened her own in Sterling Heights, and on February 9, her second location—Ann Arbor’s first—began baking in the strip center across Washtenaw from Arborland.

The name is a play on words, with “bundt” doubling for “but”: They sell nothing but bundt cakes. Eleven flavors are offered, with lemon, red velvet, white chocolate raspberry, and chocolate chocolate chip the most popular.

“Once people taste it, they’re just amazed and totally hooked,” Jones gushes. “They’re very moist and flavorful … And our butter–cream cheese frosting, people are obsessed with.”

They come in four sizes, from two-bite “bundtinis” sold by the dozen, to eight- and ten-inch donut-shaped cakes. In between is the softball-sized “bundtlet” for $5.75, and they’re ready to make up to 4,000 of them fresh daily. Bundlets nominally serve two, “but let’s just tell the truth here,” Jones says. “Everyone I know eats the whole thing.”

A team of fifteen bakes, frosts, decorates, sells, and delivers cakes locally. “And if my gut feeling is right about this community and this bakery, I think we’ll probably get up to twenty-five [employees],” Jones adds, clearly pleased to have found an “amazing location with great visibility, where there’s lots of people coming through, around other great retailers and food.”
