It’s not just residents of the new Verve luxury student apartments who take advantage of its lounge-like lobby and coffee stand, Misfit Society Coffee Club.

“A lot of adults come in here with their backpacks” to work and sip cappuccino, observes Dre Hubers, one of two U-M students staffing the outpost of Misfit’s funky coffee shop two blocks west on East U.

This location retains a taste of the original’s retro furnishings, including a cassette player for throwback jams during the morning rush. House-made syrups—lavender, bananas foster, coconut raspberry—enliven the lattes, and a snack case includes muffins, scones, and parfaits.

Hubers and her colleague, Varshini Mutta, seemed to stifle laughs when asked if they also live in the high-rise, which opened in August. (They don’t.) Monthly rents range from $1,459 to $2,999.
