“We got price point!” says Shawn McBride, store manager of Mattress Geeks in the Colonnade. “But we’re not that guy in a suit chasing you around the store” trying to upsell you on a mattress. “Yah wanna put somebody where they want to spend.” Anything from a Tempur-Pedic or organic latex Savvy Rest mattress and box spring, for several thousand dollars, down to a $299 mattress and box springs set. McBride attributes his cocky speech rhythms to his Staten Island mother, though he’s from California. “And we have financing.” Can’t afford a Temp (his shorthand for Tempur-Pedic) set? He’ll sell you “matt only,” if you ask. Or come on over to the other side of the store and look at a Sealy Optimum, a cheaper memory-foam alternative. “It’s got nine-pound density. Yeah, that’s comparable to a Temp, but I don’t always say that. People who buy a matt once in their life look at you like ‘what are you talking about?'”

Mattress Geeks is basically the Mattress & Futon Shoppe that moved out of Boulevard Plaza (the very part of the building Arbor Farms recently expanded into), part of a small regional chain. “Yeah, same company,” he says. “It’s a name they came up with for newer locations.”

Out on Washtenaw, the Mattress & Futon Shoppe near the Benjamin Moore/Anderson’s paint store also renamed itself Mattress Geeks last spring, says its store manager Randy Fazio.
