The independent florist Lily’s Garden recently completed its move from the house next to Zingerman’s Next Door in Kerrytown to the south side of town.

Harriet Held says living and working in the Detroit St. house was ideal when her kids were growing up, but the smaller studio space on Jewett just east of South Industrial suits her better these days. She’s the sole owner remaining from the three-woman partnership that purchased the business in 2003 from Lily Kittle, who now operates another eponymous shop in Saline.

Flashback: Lily’s Garden Moves (Sept. 2011)

Leaving a pedestrian-rich part of town may mean less spontaneous traffic, but the trade-off is the convenience of free parking for customers dropping in or picking up, she notes. Besides, “a lot of what we do is even more online than it used to be.”

Another long-term trend is toward more eco-friendly business practices. “We’re trying to focus more on locally grown,” she says. “And then phasing out floral foam, things like that, being more conscious of what containers we use, how we recycle and compost.”
