The local ensemble performs Japanese festival and folk music on traditional instruments, including the taiko drum and the koto, a kind of plucked zither known as Japan’s national instrument. Followed by a traditional Japanese calligraphy demonstration by Shodo calligraphy artist Kyoko Fujii and an interactive Bon Dance celebrating life and community. 6–7 p.m., AADL Downtown. Free. All singers welcome to join Choral Union director Scott Hanoian in a sing-through of Mendelssohn’s epic 1846 oratorio. The work depicts the biblical prophet’s life from the Book of Kings and dramatically evokes drought, earthquakes, and Elijah’s ascent to heaven. Tonight, participants practice the more difficult parts and, after a break, sing Part 1 in its entirety. No auditions required; music provided (or bring your own, if you have it). Sung in English.
