“Those are the water lilies from Ode to Huron by Tatum Lorway,” writes Dave Bicknell—the “mural made up of backlit metal panels” inside the Barton-Bandemer Tunnel. Completed in November 2025, the tunnel runs beneath the railroad tracks, connecting Bandemer Park to Barton Nature Area. “I’m so glad that for the first time in my life, bikers and walkers can access … Huron River Dr. upstream from town safely and legally,” writes Dan Ezekiel, who has biked through it several times already. For Trevor Denton, “a U-M cross-country and track alum trying to keep up with running,” the tunnel is “a game changer (however some days I do miss the thrill of jumping the train tracks).”

Ken Koral notes that the path is part of the Border to Border Trail, and Rudi Hauleitner adds, “It’s great to see how the B2B grows and starts to connect more and more communities!”

Flashback: Karen’s Trail (Apr. 2017)

“We marveled at this artwork on a recent ramble along the river,” says Amy Oclassen. The mural, writes David Karl, incorporates “thirty-eight Corten laser-cut panels” designed by Lorway and fabricated by Detroit Metal Elements. “Lovely!” sums up Sara Kitzsteiner.

We received twenty-one entries in May; all but two were correct. Our randomly selected winner is Oclassen—new to Ann Arbor and “tickled to be able to answer” on her first try. Lucky at the draw, too! She will enjoy her $25 gift certificate at Kiwanis Thrift Shop.

Use the I Spy image and hint to identify the Ann Arbor location. Send your entries to [email protected] or PO Box 1187, AA 48106. All correct entries received by noon, June 10, will be eligible for our random drawings.
