Q. Bus stop shelters are a blessing in providing protection from rain and a place to sit. How is it decided where they should be placed?
A. Many criteria are used to determine shelter placement, but the most important is how many people use the stop—the industry standard is fifty or more passenger boardings per day. The AAATA, which has a total of 1,267 bus stops, has installed thirty shelters in the last five years, bringing the total to 124. Other organizations, including the U-M and EMU, own about thirty more.
AAATA’s Adopt-A-Stop program, founded in 2005, recruits sponsors to help keep bus shelters clean. More than 100 are currently adopted.
