Andrea Cocciolone and Rose Richards, decades-long friends with a common interest in adventure racing—running, biking, and kayaking—are nearly a year into their latest adventure, Arise Bakery and Cafe.

It’s been “a lot of work, but it’s been pretty fun, and I feel like we’re starting to get a reputation in the community, so that’s good,” Cocciolone says.

Open for breakfast and lunch in the Oaks Plaza, Arise takes its name partly from the first initials of its owners, but also to evoke a sense of new beginnings, she says.

Breakfast sandwiches, with options including Barry Bagels, are popular so far, as are the turkey Reuben and the jambon-beurre, with Boar’s Head ham and Gruyère cheese in a buttered baguette.

Coffee drinks feature Ypsilanti roaster Hyperion Coffee’s products, and a slate of house-made pastries includes Guinness brownies.

Cocciolone says they already have some loyal customers who return for their gluten-free items.

“We’re learning and willing to keep learning,” she says of their enterprise, a full-time effort for both. “We’re flexible, we can accommodate most dietary needs, and we’re always going to strive to have delicious, high-quality food.”
