January’s I Spy “shows a detail of the storefront

facade at 310 South State Street,” writes Ivana Tullett. “At first I thought it must be on Nickels Arcade,” adds Claire Moffett, “but then I realized I was a little too far down the street. It’s the old ‘get your game on’ store on State St.!”

“Originally, it held Wahr’s Bookstore which opened at that location in 1892,” writes Silvia Ruiz. David Karl notes that in 1903, Wahr’s moved to 316 S. State St., “where it remained open until his grandson sold the stock to the Borders brothers in 1975.”

Dave Bicknell recalls that the space was “Marty’s clothing store in the 1970s.” Before that, adds Karl, it was “Saffell and Bush men’s wear.

Regardless of the occupant, says Karl, “I’ve always stopped and admired the design of the building. One of the more interesting ones in a city with quite a few architectural gems.”

We received ten entries in January, nine of which were correct. Tullett won our random drawing winner and will enjoy her $25 gift certificate at Isalita.
