“I got stumped,” writes Dave Bicknell about March’s I Spy. “I’ve got nothing,” concurs David Karl. But Allison Smith “remembered that quite a few houses on Division have nice columns, so I took a little drive, and there it was!”
“Recently uncovered,” says Nancy Taylor citing March’s clue, is the house “on the corner of Division and E. Kingsley.” It’s “looking so much better” without the siding, writes Bob Maddox. “Hope some of this charm” remains after renovation, says Andy Bayer.
“I’ve been researching this house,” writes local historian Susan Wineberg. She spotted the unveiling in December: “… an old building shorn of its ugly asbestos siding to reveal the beauty underneath,” she writes in an article for the Old Fourth Ward Association’s Spring newsletter. Wineberg was able to tour this mid-1860s structure with the permission of new owner Zaki Alawi before interior renovations started. “We found the remnants of what clearly had been a showpiece house,” including two parlors, elaborate trim, and a painted slate fireplace.
