“Black Hole: Trilogy and Triathlon”: Shamel Pitts Tribe (University Musical Society)

Mar. 14 & 15. Afrofuturism-inspired dance performance by a trio of dancers, who move against a background of video projections and stark, monochromatic lights to an evocative soundscape of sci-fi–inspired music by U-M grad Sivan Jacobovitz mixed with sound samples and spoken word. The piece was called “curiously stylish and sincere, glossily cold and tender” by the New York Times, which listed it as a critics’ pick. This New York–based company is a multidisciplinary arts collective founded in 2019 by choreographer and dancer Shamel Pitts, a 2024 MacArthur fellow and 2020 Guggenheim fellow in choreography. 8 p.m., Power Center. Tickets $30–$54 (students, $15-$20) in advance at ums.org, by phone, and (if available) at the door. (734) 764–2538.
