“They were struggling,” says Ed Shaffran, landlord to Shine, the Fourth Avenue gift shop that closed before Halloween. It had the bad luck to open in the middle of winter, then “just as things were heating up, the city tore up the street in front of them. Believe me, I had no idea that was going to happen.” This Shine was the second location of a Royal Oak store that is still doing fine in Royal Oak.

A replacement was waiting in the wings: Lauren Naimola’s Dear Golden. “It will be a high-end vintage and modern clothing shop with a small vintage bridal salon as well,” Naimola writes. “Right now I am working on renovating the space and the tentative opening will most likely be in March.”
