Q. Why aren’t the wood planks used in the Argo boardwalk and elsewhere in our parks ever painted? Wouldn’t that help them last longer? And what about using composite materials?
A. “We used treated pine boards in our boardwalks,” deputy parks manager Scott Spooner emails. “The treatment allows the wood to last longer when left outside. … Paint would not significantly increase its lifespan.
“We do not use composite boards mostly due to cost. The composite decking is more expensive and not as structurally strong as traditional wood.”
