“I spy the Shinola Clock!” says Gaia Stanley about April’s feature. “That’s the crown on the Shinola watch at the southeast corner of Main and Liberty,” agrees Rob Utterback. “Their dials are distinctive,” offers Steven Huang, “and hugely popular.” “Downtown is more fun with signs such as this,” adds Janet Shane.

“It’s … on the Selo Shevel building,” writes Joel Henry-Fisher, referring to the gallery that inhabited this space for over twenty years. Now, notes Joe Palms, it’s “the newly christened Franworth building.” Known for years as the Hutzel Building–Hutzel’s Department Store opened its doors here in 1916–it now bears the name of the franchise development company that took most of the upper level office space. Shinola fills the ground-floor retail space. This Detroit-based company, known for locally sourced and made goods such as watches, handcrafted leather products, and bicycles, employs Ann Arbor-based bookmaker Edwards Brothers Malloy to make their linen-bound journals.

Thirty-two people correctly identified Shinola. Our winner, drawn at random, is Andre Struger. “Great picture,” he writes–“guessed it right away.” Andre will enjoy his $25 gift certificate at the Michigan Theater.
