Ypsilanti Memorial Day Procession: American Legion Post 282

2026 Memorial Day Procession Press Release

More than cook-outs and fun, Memorial Day has been set aside as a time for each generation to remember and honor those brave patriots who died in service to our Country. Please join American Legion Post 282 and the City of Ypsilanti on Monday, May 25, 9am, for Ypsilanti’s traditional, respectful observance.

Stepping off at 9 AM, Ypsilanti’s procession can be watched from anywhere along its customary route from Michigan Avenue north on North Huron Street to Cross Street. There we will pause on the bridge to honor the memory of those freedom fighters lost at sea with prayer and by dropping flowers into the Huron River. There will be a 21-gun salute.

We will then proceed east on Cross to River Street and north on River to Highland Cemetery for a short ceremony at the foot of the Civil War Memorial, near the memorials to the Unknown Soldier and to our African American soldiers. Past Post 282 Commander Dan Myers invites everyone, as they are able, to follow the procession all the way to the cemetery for the laying of wreaths. Taps will be played.

Begun in 1868, the last Monday in May was originally designated as “Decoration Day.” This was to be a time for reflection and the decoration of the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers who died during the Civil War. Now we make this an occasion to memorialize the fallen from all wars fought to keep our freedoms alive. Please join us.
