Rhiannon Giddens: University Musical Society
This widely heralded Americana singer-songwriter, fiddler, and banjo player sings with a piercingly resonant voice that imbues her eclectic, rootsy brand of folk with a particularly contemporary sensibility. Known for her versatility and musical exploration, Giddens is a MacArthur Genius Grant recipient who took over artistic direction of the cross-cultural Silkroad ensemble from cellist Yo-Yo Ma in 2020. Her latest release, a return to her roots, is a Grammy-nominated album of North Carolina fiddle and banjo music, What Did the Blackbird Say to the Crow, made in collaboration with Justin Robinson, her former bandmate in the African American string band the Carolina Chocolate Drops. 7:30 p.m., Hill Auditorium. Tickets $30–$108 (students, $15–$20), in advance at tickets.ums.org, by phone, & (if available) at the door. (734) 764–2538.
