U-M Museum of Natural History Planetarium & Dome Theater
Every Fri.–Sun. Three different audiovisual planetarium shows suitable for all ages. We Are Stars (noon) explores the secrets of our cosmic chemistry and our explosive origins, connecting life on Earth to the evolution of the universe. The Sky Tonight (1 & 3 p.m.) is an exploration of the current night sky, with tips on how to find the cardinal directions, constellations, and planets on your own. Tales of the Maya Skies (2 p.m.) immerses viewers in the wonders of Mayan science, examining how Mayan scholars developed a sophisticated understanding of astronomy, architecture, and mathematics that enabled them to predict solstices, solar eclipses, weather patterns, and planetary movements. “John Proctor is the Villain”: U-M Theatre Department
Nov. 21–24. Halena Kays directs drama students in Kimberly Belflower’s 2022 comedy drama of trust, betrayal, and abuse of power written in response to the #MeToo movement. Berliner Philharmoniker: University Musical Society
Kirill Petrenko conducts this superb orchestra on a limited tour. Today’s entire program is one of Anton Bruckner’s most contrapuntally intricate works, the monumental 1876 Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major, a work that explores themes of struggle, redemption, and transcendence. “It’s the tone quality that hits you first with the Berlin Philharmonic: like a shot of adrenaline” wrote the Guardian U.K. reviewer of this program in early September. The classic Manhattan recipe is simple, but it’s really just the beginning. In this lab-style class you’ll dive deep into choices around whiskey, vermouth, bitters and ratios, and come away with a recipe for your ideal version of this timeless cocktail.
Your booking includes light snacks (pretzels, nuts). The Last Word is closed during the class, so no food service is available. The class includes a combination of history and stories, technique instruction, and hands-on making of cocktails. Plus sampling, of course! Join us for a night of fan-favorites, like John Williams' iconic Superman March and Klaus Badelt’s themes from Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, Modest Muggorsky’s Night on Bald Mountain, and so much more! “Pops Saves the World” will be an engaging and dynamic show utilizing a unique combination of stage antics, vocal performers, multimedia, and special effects.
Pops appeals to the music-lover in everyone with its diverse repertoire, ranging from classical pieces to popular film scores. Working under the guidance and in tandem with the University Activities Center, the Michigan Pops Orchestra’s members comprise a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students studying anything from English to Engineering to Music, across all colleges and schools at the University of Michigan. U-M Gamelan Ensemble: U-M Music School
This popular U-M ensemble performs traditional Indonesian music. A gamelan is an assembly of 50 gongs and metallophones, drums, strings, flutes, xylophone, and singers. The music is a gorgeous concatenation of nonharmonic melodies built on cycles marked by the largest gong and subdivided by the other instruments. This concert will include several 350-year-old pieces originating from the village of Sidan on Bali, among other gamelan repertoire.
