U-M Gamelan Ensemble: U-M Music School

This popular U-M ensemble performs traditional Indonesian music. A gamelan is an assembly of 50 gongs and metallophones, drums, strings, flutes, xylophone, and singers. The music is a gorgeous concatenation of nonharmonic melodies built on cycles marked by the largest gong and subdivided by the other instruments. This concert will include several 350-year-old pieces originating from the village of Sidan on Bali, among other gamelan repertoire. Founded in 1966, the U-M’s Gamelan Ensemble is one of the oldest in the U.S. 7:30 p.m., U-M Moore Bldg. McIntosh Theatre, 1100 Baits. Free. (734) 615–3204.
