“The Merry Wives of Windsor”: U-M Residential College/Nichols Arboretum

Every Thurs.–Sun., June 5–29. Carol Gray directs students and local actors in an alfresco production of Shakespeare’s high-spirited farce, which features the bard’s best-loved comic character, the charming yet roguish knight Falstaff, who schemes to charm his way into the hearts and purses of 2 ladies who decide to beat the portly braggart at his own game. The RC’s annual Shakespeare in the Arb production is a hugely popular local summer tradition. The action moves from spot to spot within the Arb, and the production takes special care to make the shifting environments an active force in the performance. Audience members should be prepared for the weather conditions and periods of sitting, standing, & walking and bring a light-weight chair or blanket to sit on. 6:30 p.m., meet at the Peony Garden entrance at 1610 Washington Heights. $25 (Matthaei-Arb members, $20; kids, $15) in advance only. “West Side Story”: The Encore Musical Theatre Company

Michael Berry directs this local professional company in Arthur Laurents’s spirited 1957 musical adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, set in 1950s New York and featuring rival street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds: the largely nativist White Jets, and the Sharks, recent immigrants from Puerto Rico. The work explores themes of racial conflict, pursuit of the American dream, and the struggle to assimilate while maintaining cultural identity. Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival in Residence: Kerrytown Concert House

“Jorge Luis Borges Gives a Lecture on Anatomy”: Theatre Nova

Every Fri.–Sun., June 6–29. Kat Walsh directs the premiere of Theatre Nova founder Carla Milarch’s play about an imaginary lecture by famed Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges. At first, the master of metafiction appears to be discussing anatomy, but that notion quickly gives way as he navigates multiple timelines and universes, in search of the loves of his life.
