“C’est la VAE: A French Christmas”: Vocal Arts Ensemble
Benjamin Cohen directs this 24-voice local chamber choir in a program of holiday music from France highlighted by Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s delightful 1694 Messe de Minuit pour Noël (Midnight Mass for Christmas), which interweaves French folk songs in a liturgical setting, and Francis Poulenc’s haunting and serene Quatre Motets pour le temps de Noël, a 1952 work that challenges any choir’s rhythmic precision and intonation. Also, French carols and folk songs, including settings of French Sephardic melodies. 5–6:30 p.m., First Congregational Church, 608 E. William St. Tickets $25 ($20, students & seniors; kids 12 & under, free) in advance at a2tix.com and at the door. vocalartsannarbor@gmail.com.
