“West Side Story”: The Encore Musical Theatre Company
Every Wed.–Sun., June 5–July 6 (except June 25). Michael Berry directs this local professional company in Arthur Laurents’s spirited 1957 musical adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, set in 1950s New York and featuring rival street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds: the largely nativist White Jets, and the Sharks, recent immigrants from Puerto Rico. The work explores themes of racial conflict, pursuit of the American dream, and the struggle to assimilate while maintaining cultural identity.
