July’s I Spy “picture is of the iron sculpture in front of the U of M Art Museum,” writes Suzanne Butch. Tara Queen identifies it as “the Mark di Suvero swinging sculpture,” while Jim Ferguson adds its name: “Shang.” The photo shows “the middle-upper portion of the sculpture,” specifies Joe Palms, who recognized di Suvero’s work from a picture his mother-in-law took of his wife sitting on the swing.

Installed in front of UMMA’s Frankl Wing. Shang was originally titled Gateway; the current title reportedly refers to the Shang dynasty in China (di Suvero was born in Shanghai in 1933).

Eight people correctly identified July’s feature. The closely cropped image of the beams also brought Arborland’s “A” to mind for another entrant. Our winner, drawn randomly from the correct entries, is Dave Bicknell. He’ll enjoy his $25 gift certificate at Downtown Home and Garden.

To enter this month’s contest, use the photo and clue on the Back page of the August issue to identify the scene, then follow the instructions at the bottom of the page.
