“November’s I Spy is a wonderful tribute to Angelo’s,” writes Janine Hutchinson. “Eggs Over Easy, Hash Browns, and You!” she finishes with lyrics to “Angelo’s”—the original tribute. “‘Over Easy’ was the overly easy giveaway for those of us who remember Dick Siegel’s song,” says David Frye. “Wonderful ode to Angelo’s,” writes Laura McEwen. “My family will miss it!” “We are bummed,” says Dyke McEwen. “It’s an iconic restaurant.”
“The photo shows the topmost facade,” writes Kenneth Koral and his I Spy partner (“now a Chicagoan”) Jessica Hewlett. It depicts the building “above the diner Angelo’s, hence the hint Over Easy,” writes Cathy Chow. Referring to the name in the building’s upper facade, she adds, “Frank Kopf owned a confectionary store” in the building at Catherine and Glen.
By the 1950s it was a diner—one that was already named Angelo’s when Angelo and Pat Vangelatos bought it in 1956. Their son Steve took over in 1986 and is now retiring. While customers understand his and the diner’s retirement, eggs over hard is the sentiment at losing this local treasure. Jason Kahn, who recently had the pleasure of dining there again, writes “Over easy … over and out … sadly.” Kahn is our winner, randomly selected from seventeen correct entries, and will enjoy his $25 gift certificate at Cardamom.
