GIBBS: Serving Those Who Serve

People are funny. Okay, maybe not all 131 of you who correctly identified the Fake Ad for the Government Issue Bulletin Board System (GIBBS) on page 73 of the October issue, but enough to give us a few chuckles.

“The October Fake Ad is GIBBS, serving those who serve,” wrote Ben Bohnsack, whose name we hope to feature in a future Fake Ad. “I like the long website address. It’s almost impossible to type it all in without a mystake.”

“Good job to whoever had to collect all those stock photos of people in fatigues on computers!” wrote Teddy Keeling.

And Bryan Magnuson wrote, “The fake ad is [for] G.I. BBS, which is of course the name of last month’s winner. The ad includes what might be the longest url I have ever seen, you must have used ‘TitanicURL’ instead of TinyURL to come up with that.”

In addition to all the humor, there may also have been a record set: “Hello, My 9-year-old son found the Fake Ad within five minutes of receiving the Observer in the mail—he’s got a sharp eye! Take Care, Marnie and Gavin.”

Our winner is Diane Fenske. She’s taking her gift certificate to Zingerman’s.

To enter this month’s contest, find the Fake Ad and let us know at [email protected]. Hint: The ad always contains the last name of the previous month’s winner in some form.
