Just a decade ago, the land surrounding the Meijer store at Jackson and Zeeb was mostly parking and potential. Those out-lots now host everything from an urgent-care center to a tobacco shop, along with quick-service food and drink options galore.

The final building to rise contains four units, and the first to open there is Five Guys, known for its made-to-order burgers, milkshakes with mix-ins, and french fries made with peanut oil. The complimentary peanuts serve as both a diversion for waiting customers and a warning to ward off those allergic.
General manager Steve Paul notes that they’ve recently begun offering a combo meal option to add fries and a drink to any sandwich (including the new patty melt) for $5 extra. “You’re actually saving money, because Five Guys can be rather expensive when you buy everything separate,” he says. A single-patty “little hamburger” with toppings is $7.29.
Based in Alexandria, Virginia, Five Guys is named for the relatives who in 1986 founded what remains a family-owned company. Many of its 1,800-plus locations are franchises, but all Michigan stores are now corporate-owned, Paul reports. Other area locations are in Arborland and in Pittsfield Twp. (also in a Meijer out-lot). A former campus location is now Sweetgreen.
Other soon-to-open occupants of the new Scio Twp. building are Penn Station East Coast Subs, Wing Snob, and a UPS Store.
