March’s photo shows “a column outside the new Echelon Kitchen and Bar that just opened,” writes Dyke McEwen. It’s on the “southwest corner of Main Street and Washington,” says Debbie Onderdonk. “The building in the background is Cafe Zola.”

“This is the same location as the old Mongolian Grill that opened almost 30 years ago,” recalls David Karl. Dave Bicknell shares that the space took its present form as a Kresge five-and-dime store: it “was built in 1926 and to make way for it [the 1860] Hangsterfer Hall was leveled.” Both buildings are now incorporated in Echelon’s design. From 1979 to 1993, the Ann Arbor Observer office was upstairs.
“The tiled pillar in front of the Echelon Kitchen and Bar has different Ann Arbor scenes and locations,” says Silvia Ruiz. Echelon carried this tribute inside, incorporating the drawings of Ann Arbor’s historic buildings in the wall decor. “Glad that they have finally opened,” writes Ginny Weingate, who adds that last month’s issue also had “a nice article about the restaurant” that detailed the extensive renovation. “Looks great from the outside, still have to try the inside,” says Rudi Hauleitner. “The menu looks to be exciting,” say Karl. “Bon appetit.”
