Q. I have heard, more than once, that more people die in Ann Arbor than live in Ann Arbor, because the U-M hospital is here and people go there and die. Is that actually true? There are 123,000 people who live in Ann Arbor, and I can’t imagine anything like that many people die at the hospital each year.
A. There is nothing wrong with your imagination. Fewer than 116,000 people died in the entire state of Michigan last year—and that included more than 11,000 victims of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The most recent year for which the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services could provide local figures was 2018, when 1,663 people died in the City of Ann Arbor.
