August’s clue–once moved, soon razed–“helped solve the mystery,” writes Dan Coughlin. “I had given up,” writes Kenneth F. Koral, until “a friend … gave me the hint as to where buildings might soon be razed.” That would be frequent I Spy entrant Ginny Weingate; together, they nailed it! “I spy the entrance to 606 E. Washington that faces Lane Hall,” writes Jami Socha-Phegley. It “will soon be razed to make way for another high-rise.”
“The home was built in the 1860’s, [near] the corner of Washington and State Street, by Zenas and Eliza Burd,” writes Barb Tester. In 1916, it “was moved to its current location to make room for Lane Hall,” acquired by U-M in 1936. Local architectural historian Susan Wineberg shared an image of the home from 1870 on State next to a smaller house: “I think [both] were moved when Lane was built.”
“Howard Frehsee [plans] to build the tallest building in downtown Ann Arbor [since] the 1960’s,” writes Louisa Griffes. In December 2019, “Ann Arbor City Council approved the development.” ‘COVID-19 delayed groundbreaking, but construction should “start in 2021 … amidst some public concern,” Louisa adds.
