“Great clue!” says Barb Tester. “‘Get there before the 3rd’ reminds us that the Red Hawk Bar & Grill [was] slated to close on May third after thirty-three years of business.” “Having lived in Ann Arbor for only thirty-two years, all I’ve ever known is the Red Hawk,” writes David Karl. “Such a shame to lose a place like this.”

Losing Any Familiar Place Is Hard, but the Red Hawk’s Closing Cuts Deep
The photo shows the “second-floor windows and their lintel ornaments at 316 S. State St.,” says Eric Sobocinski. The upper facade is “pressed tin,” shares local architectural historian Susan Wineberg, and the building “began its life as the grocery store of Samuel Hendrickson in 1872.” Since the 1990s, it’s been a beloved community gathering place. “It’s a pity to see them leave,” writes Rudi Hauleitner.
“I used to enjoy sharing the ‘Killer Nachos’ with friends there,” says Dave Bicknell. Joanne Coughlin recalls “many memories of going there after U-M hockey games with our friends for a sandwich, a bowl of soup, and a ‘pour.’ They will be missed!”
