“John Proctor is the Villain”: U-M Theatre Department
Nov. 21–24. Halena Kays directs drama students in Kimberly Belflower’s 2022 comedy drama of trust, betrayal, and abuse of power written in response to the #MeToo movement. Set in a small Georgia town, the plot focuses on a high school literature class, and particularly on a group of girls, as they discuss Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and begin to see echoes of witch trials unfolding in their world. “An incisive examination of the sexual politics of recent history,” says Theatrely’s Nathan Pugh in a review of the play’s 2022 Washington, D.C., premiere, “this is the rare piece of media that actually gets Gen Z right.” Recommended for ages 15 & up. 7:30 p.m. (Thurs.), 8 p.m. (Fri. & Sat.), & 2 p.m. (Sun.), Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre, 911 North University.
