Herbie Hancock: University Musical Society
Born in Chicago in 1940, Hancock was a piano prodigy who performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at age 11, began playing jazz in high school, and has gone on to win 14 Grammys, including 2007 Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters, a tribute to friend Joni Mitchell. Hancock has delved into everything from funk and soul to hip-hop and acid jazz—“unpredictable and ideas-based, entertaining and ageless” the Standard said of a July date in London. With trumpeter Terence Blanchard, bassist James Genus, guitarist Lionel Loueke, and drummer Jaylen Petinaud. 7:30 p.m., Hill Auditorium. Tickets $36-$133 at (734) 764–2538 and tickets.ums.org, and (if available) at the door.
