“Folk•lore”: Ariel Quartet with cellist Alisa Weilerstein (University Musical Society)

The Ariel Quartet and cellist Alisa Weilerstein explore how folk music influences art music through a program that begins with an uninterrupted suite of traditional folk music from around the world, along with pieces dating back to the origins of Western classical music. Then they perform Schubert’s Cello Quintet in C Major, one of the most influential works in classical repertoire. Weilerstein’s playing incorporates a “flawless technical address, lustrous tone-production and intrepid range of dynamics,” according to a Gramophone reviewer. The Cincinnati-based Ariel Quartet, formed in Israel in 1998, offers “impeccable clarity and impressive virtuosity” according to the Calgary Herald. Violinists Gershon Gerchikov and Alexandra Kazovsky, violist Jan Grüning, and violoncellist Amit Even-Tov make up the ensemble. 7:30 p.m. Rackham Auditorium. $40–$67 (students $15–$20) in advance only at ums.org/season/2024-25-season or (734) 764–2538.
