No, that’s not a typo: Is that $150,000 sale of 2188 Hemlock Dr. for real? Was that a sale within a family? Or a vacant lot? It is, in fact, a 3-bedroom, 1-bath ranch in Arbor Oaks, one of hundreds of affordable, HUD-financed homes built around Bryant School in the early 1970s. The buyer, listed as Westlake Capital, LLC, appears to be U-M alum Loutfi Haidous. His Linked-In page says he’s a “real estate developer and entrepreneur,” so a fix-and-flip seems likely. The house last sold for $34,000 in 1989—the equivalent of about $86,000 in 2024.

Dusty May’s $2.2M Barton Hills pad: The new U-M men’s basketball head coach has chosen a rambling white mid-century modern 5,606-square-foot, 4-bedroom, 4-bath spread at 540 Barton Shores Dr. as his new home. The forty-seven-year-old father of three, whose first-year base salary is $3.55 million, is presumably enjoying a big step up from wherever he lived as an assistant coach at EMU from 2005–06.

A big month for $1M+ sales, sort of: The map is crowded with a whopping thirty million-dollar houses, and some Realtors did make very good commissions this month. But there are some caveats. Nine of those $1M+ sales actually took place earlier this year and only now are appearing in the state’s database. Of those, six are in Superior Twp., whose assessor finally caught up with sales missed following a year-end system change.

This Old House of the Month: The stately Italianate 4-bedroom, 4-bath home at 216 Catherine St. started its life in 1869 as the home and marble-works shop of German immigrant Anton Eisele. It sold for $1.6 million last month. The sales listing emphasized both its deep history and something much more modern: An attached one-time carriage house brought in $43,416 on Airbnb in 2023 off of 262 nights. New owners David Anderson and Reina Badran took that bit to heart; they’re now listing both the carriage house and the main house separately for rent. Described as “a sought-after destination for discerning travelers,” the house alone rents for as much as $1,334 on weekend nights—plus a $300 cleaning fee.
