Eli Boyer, U-M class of 2007, double-majored in economics and sociology and “knew I was gonna be an entrepreneur. I knew I wanted to do something in Ann Arbor.”
He’d worked in restaurants since age fourteen and developed his professional chops in Chicago before returning to southeast Michigan and launching Voyager, a seafood bistro in Ferndale, and Iggy’s Eggies, a walk-up window serving breakfast sandwiches and burgers in downtown Detroit.
His second Iggy’s, in the former Salads UP spot near campus, at least has some counter seating. But it’s still mostly a portable product: the core offering is a build-your-own egg sandwich starting at $3.75, with a runny yolk and a zippy mustard-based signature sauce. He says that some people are surprised to find “how well it works with eggs.”
Boyer credits the name to his then-three-year-old daughter, who shouted out the Mario Kart character “Iggy” during a gaming session. “We didn’t really consider anything else,” he says. “It just sounded too good, and it was too much fun.”
