Avalon Cafe and Kitchen has moved a block west, joining forces with another Mission Restaurant Group restaurant, the Pretzel Bell.

Avalon had been at 120 E. Liberty since 2016. After dropping dinner service to focus on breakfast and lunch, it sold its liquor license to another Mission establishment, Jolly Pumpkin. The move to what had been the Pretzel Bell Captain’s Room event space allows for the return of Bloody Marys, mimosas, draft beer, and wine. “We’re really excited to be able to launch that back out,” says Joanne Bower, the managing partner for the two restaurants now sharing a kitchen. She also oversees Avalon’s two locations in Detroit.

They’re focusing on a lower-priced menu and counter service Mondays through Thursdays, with full-service, sit-down brunches Fridays through Sundays. They’re continuing with local roaster Mighty Good Coffee, nearby on N. Main, but have opted for a different variety. “Now we have a nice bright espresso where you can really taste features in it like cocoa and oranges and things like that, as opposed to just getting more of a roasty taste from it,” Bower explains.

Avalon was closed for three weeks during the transition, but now all the managers have transferred over, as have about three-quarters of the employees, she says. “It’s the same quality, as many organic products as possible, as much local as possible—so just sticking true to our roots.”
