Center for Consciousness Science Symposium: Covert Consciousness in Humans, Animals, and Machines: Center for Consciousness Science
Community Listing
There is growing interest in the question whether artificial intelligent systems may someday become conscious. How could we tell? But the roots of this problem also extend to medical neuroscience. Whether patients who are unable to communicate, such as those in coma or deep anesthesia, may harbor fragments of consciousness is currently impossible to determine with certainty. Likewise, we do not know if animals that don’t speak our language are conscious or not. Discussion is also ongoing whether human cerebral organoids or artificial neuronal networks could have the necessary features to be consciously aware. Thus, there is a similar fundamental problem with respect to humans, animals, and artificial systems that we face to determine the presence of conscious awareness in the absence of a possibility for direct verbal or behavioral verification. The presence of consciousness without observable signs is called covert consciousness.
The symposium will focus on this common problem, the detection of covert consciousness in humans, animals, and biological or artificial systems. Different views from the disciplines of clinical and experimental neuroscience, neurobiology, philosophy, and artificial intelligence will be featured and followed by open discussion.
