Before Dana McGrath announced the closing this summer of La Maison, her furniture and home decor boutique on Main St., she shared the news with her building neighbor, Deborah Coy. Coy had always wanted to move her women’s clothing shop, The Attic Boutique, to a larger space. When the landlord gave the green light, Coy got to work expanding her inventory with more clothes, accessories, and home goods for her opening in mid-September. With the move, she’s tripled her space and renamed the store Lola, after her family’s ten-year-old American bulldog.

First launched in 2013, The Attic Boutique takes its name from its original, tiny space above Seitz’s Tavern. Though it moved to a street-level spot on the other side of Middle St. just six months later, Coy kept the name.

Coy describes her clothing as “on trend and affordable … It’s everyday clothes and I also have cute tops for work and some dresses for date night.” She says she appeals to women in their late teens to fifties but also has older customers.

Coy will sell a selection of Cherry Republic products as well—a tradition started in the Village Shoppe in that same space that had continued at McGrath’s La Maison.

In a Facebook post, McGrath thanked her customers and the “many new friends” she made during nine years in business and announced she’d accepted a job in sales and interior design for McLaughlin’s Home Furnishing Designs in Novi.

“I feel like we got pretty lucky,” says Amanda Bamm (pronounced “bom”) about snagging the vacancy created when the Attic Boutique moved. Amanda and her husband Briston plan to open Nevermore Décor Store November 1 in the 500-square-foot space.

The couple launched Nevermore in downtown Jackson two years ago. That store now has 2,000 square feet, but started out in 400, Amanda says, “so I know I can make [500 feet] work.”

The Bamms redecorate the store each season to feature new gift and home decor items. First up: Christmas, with nutcracker and ornament collections and holiday decor. “People come to us to find special gifts,” she says, and she hopes the store will become part of customers’ family traditions.

Other items Bamm plans for the space include throw pillows, seasonal artwork, centerpieces, furniture pieces such as accent chairs, and a selection of baby and young children’s apparel. They’ll also feature an indoor fire pit that’s proved popular in Jackson, which retails for $125.
