In the West Stadium Shopping Center, a newish sign drew our attention to a business that we’d missed when it opened last year.
Offering mostly vintage fashions plucked from estate sales and the like, Torn and Frayed (its name evoking a deep cut from the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main St.) took the spot long occupied by Stadium Pharmacy.
Customers press a button at the door to be buzzed in by staff, as the storefront is shared with another venture, MF Shrooms, which deals in psychedelic mushrooms in dried or capsule forms from a counter in back. It’s one of several similar businesses that have cropped up since 2020, when the city—and later the county—essentially decriminalized such entheogenic substances.
They’re still illegal at the state and federal level, and MF Shrooms’ proprietors are understandably wary of publicity, though their website details the menu.
Chris Kurtz, an activist in the decriminalization movement, politely declined to speak on the record at this point. In response to emailed questions, his most substantive comment refers to the clothing store: “We hope to be a trusted and valued member of the Ann Arbor community. Torn and Frayed prides themselves in their sustainability efforts and encourages everyone to shop secondhand first.”
