Q. How often are Ann Arbor’s restaurants inspected?

A. Washtenaw County inspects restaurants every six months, with follow-up inspections when problems have been found, to verify remediation. All routine inspections are unannounced.

The focus is on preventing foodborne illness. Examples of violations: cross-contamination of raw food with prepared foods; pests in the kitchen; poor food temperature maintenance; and inadequate care with toxic chemicals. If the violations are not addressed in a timely fashion, the restaurant’s food service license can be suspended. Reports are posted online at washtenaw.org/1613/restaurant-inspection-reports.
