Mix, the women’s artwear and accessories boutique in Nickels Arcade since 2014, will close at the end of April.
“Business is bad, and everybody’s buying everything online,” co-owner Theresa Durand explains. “This past Black Friday, Shop Small [Business] Saturday, even though we had a sale going, it was dismal.” Even a visit and Facebook post from congresswoman Debbie Dingell couldn’t help. “And then you hear on Cyber Monday that it broke all records.”
So Durand and Bonnie Penet, the remaining founding owner, are closing both their shop and website. In-store inventory is marked down 30 to 75 percent.
Penet and Leslie Leland launched Mix in downtown Ypsilanti in 2009, and Durand became Penet’s partner about a decade ago. The Ypsi location closed in 2023.
“I’m not worried about myself right now. I’ve been through much worse in my life than closing a business,” Durand says. “So I’m gonna take some time for myself.
“We are going to miss all of our wonderful customers.”
