“Verdi’s Requiem”: University Musical Society

DSO music director Jader Bignamini leads the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the UMS Choral Union in a performance of Verdi’s spectacular and dramatic musical setting of the Catholic funeral mass, his largest nonoperatic work. With a thrilling symphonic score and virtuosic solos, the work is known for its simultaneous grandeur and intimacy, and what Classical Source critic Peter Reed calls an “astounding emotional range.” Soloists include South African soprano Vuvu Mpofu, American mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, Mexican American tenor René Barbera, and Chinese bass-baritone Shenyang. 7:30 p.m., Hill Auditorium. $30-$128. (734) 764–2438, ums.org/performance.
