“The Tragedy of Carmen”: U-M Chamber Opera

Dec. 5 & 6. Timothy Cheek directs U-M opera students in Peter Brook’s stripped-down 80-minute 1983 adaptation of the popular Bizet opera, a melodrama about a hot-blooded femme fatale who ruins a weak-willed soldier. Brook’s raw, theatrical version retains the essence of the original while heightening its passionate intensity, though at the expense of some of the original’s musicality. The stripped-down adaptation retains the most popular gems of Bizet’s famous score but cuts down the cast to 4 main characters, eliminates the choruses, and reworks the score for chamber orchestra. French, English supertitles. 7:30 p.m., U-M Moore Bldg. McIntosh Theatre, 1100 Baits. Free. (734) 764–0583.
